Description

The Mountain Ash tree, or Rowan [Luis in Gaelic] is very important in Highland folklore, being one of several trees associated with the Sidhe, or fairies.  A rowan will provide protection from witches and ill-luck when growing near a house and in the Norse tradition, it was often used for making rune staves.  There are so many traditional and folk stories surrounding the Mountain Ash they they would fill a book, alone.

It is appropriate that Scotland’s only meadery should make a mead using this most magical of Scottish trees.  Berries from around the Rookery are picked in the early autumn then they are treated to make them edible, turning the parascorbic acid into the harmless sorbic acid.  Turning poisonous berries into lovely ones is another form of magic done at The Rookery.

Mountain Ash Mead is my driest mead, and probably the driest mead on the market, but it retains a gentle, nutty and herbal character, with an almost sake-like flavour.  This mead is at its best when drunk like a shot after 30 mins in the freezer.  Just don’t forget about it!
